There are no randomised studies assessing outcome following resection compared with no treatment or other therapeutic modalities in patients with known resectable liver metastases as it is generally considered unethical not to offer surgery for resectable disease. There has been increased interest in more aggressive chemotherapy regimens that have been reported to not only control metastatic disease but also to render some advanced liver metastases resectable. Furthermore, other new modalities have become available that allow safe ablation of liver metastases without the need for surgical intervention. There is therefore a need to produce clear guidelines on the appropriate management of patients with colorectal cancer who have been shown to have hepatic metastases. These guidelines are intended to address a number of issues:

SYNCHRONOUS SURGICAL REMOVAL OF SUSPICIOUS OVARIAN METASTASES FROM COLORECTAL CANCER

Metastatic ovarian cancers occur in 3-8 percent of women undergoing surgical resection of a primary colorectal cancer. In this study we examined the characteristics of women with colorectal cancer for whom synchronous oophorectomy had been performed. In this cross-sectional study, records of patients with colorectal cancer from April 1991 through October 1999 who had undergone surgery for ...

Ten-Year Survival after Liver Resection for Colorectal Metastases: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background. Liver resection in metastatic colorectal cancer is proved to result in five-year survival of 25-40%. Several factors have been investigated to look for prognostic factors stratifications such as resection margins, node involvement in the primary disease, and interval between the primary disease and liver metastases. Methods. We searched MEDLINE and EMBASE for studies that reported t...

Sixty percent of recurrences are found in the liver, <10% of which will be resectable. Patients at high risk of developing metastases from colorectal cancer...

Robotic simultaneous resection of rectal cancer and liver metastases

Surgical resection is the only potential cure for colorectal cancer with synchronous liver metastases (SLM). Simultaneous resection of colorectal cancer and SLM using robotic-assistance has been rarely reported. We demonstrate that robotic-assisted simultaneous resection of colorectal cancer and SLMs is feasible, safe, and has potential to demonstrate good oncologic outcomes.
